Lyricists are employed by recording companies or may also be employed by artists or as freelance lyricists.  A lyricist is a writer that specializes in writing lyrics for songs.  He/she must be knowledgeable of song composition principles, styles, and trends in the music industry to be able to write lyrics that are of good quality and potentially marketable.  Lyricists may specialize in a particular genre of music or may also be versatile in being able to write lyrics for all types of music from rock, jazz, to pop music.  Lyricists need to possess a great interest in music while having excellent writing skills and musicality.
